Billy is no hero. He found himself in a German POW camp after his ship was torpedoed in the Atlantic. In the camp he made himself a go-to man, bribing the guards for contraband and selling to the prisoners. He managed to escape with a Lt. Commander Hornsby, with whom he switched dogtags when the latter was shot from behind.
“Lt. Commander” Shears was unmasked while recovering at an Army hospital in England. As the only man to have recently passed through the target area, he was tapped for the mission and threatened with prosecution for impersonating an officer when he balked.
Despite having at last agreed to join, Shears has no desire to return to Fortress Europe, and he has nightmares about what he glimpsed behind a curtain while escaping the prison.
